Natural Approach to Mental Health

  1. Jim Carrey sounds like a psychologist in saying something deep like that. I'm glad you included that quote in your paper and used that to dissect the different elements in Ayurveda. What is a little mind boggling to me is the ayurvedic perspective of food. It makes a lot of sense. Pizza is also really good. And it makes you feel good, too, until you have suddenly eaten like 10 slices. Then it's not so good. And it can also make you feel bloated, have other issues arise if you eat too much all the time and the list goes on. However, the point in me introducing that idea is to show that "comfort foods" like pizza, ice cream, chocolate, etc, are designed to introduce the "feel good" hormones and chemicals your brain needs to feel good, too. I'm not advocating for the junk but I'm bringing in something else we can look at. Have you ever noticed that sadness often brings on the feeling of craving junk food? Why is that? Is that due to addiction? Is it because we naturally crave the salty and the sweet and because we're satisfying those cravings, our body feels good? I feel like that's a separate science of its own but it would be cool to look into and see how that plays off of the ayurvedic concepts

  2. Like you said, Jim Carrey isn't a scientific or medical expert, but he is one of the more famous people in Hollywood to have publicly talked about his struggles with depression. While his opinion on depression doesn't necessarily hold more weight because of who he is, it is clear that what he says is good for improving self help and motivation is something that has worked for him in his life. Like you said, it ends up pretty close to the Ayurvedic guidelines of the same issues. Those three things can help everyone, not just those with depression.

  3. I love that you quoted Jim Carrey here. Nice break from the norm. I also really like the way you broke down your paper into distinct sections that explained multiple avenues which lead towards the same goal. My favorite part of your paper by far is the final paragraph. I love the statement about positive material. We're all surrounded by so much negative material that weighs on us and makes happiness harder to achieve. Positive material is hard to find sometimes, but it is SO helpful when we do find it. Great job expressing that.
